Hi!   This is just the start of a little web page I am putting up about the RagWing plans-built airplane.  I was only 16 years old when I took this airplane project upon myself - almost twenty years ago, now - and it proved to be an adventure that few young people will ever experience. 


In the future, I do hope to add articles about my visit with Roger Mann, the designer of the RagWing airplanes, and about the many trials and tribulations that come about when building an airplane on a $3,500 budget. 


For now, I am going to post some pictures of the old plane, now resting peacefully in my garage.  I sold the engine in 2000 to a fellow in Florida, but I have the rest of the plane here.  I actually built the equivalent of two airplanes, because my skills improved so much as I went along that I decided to replace many parts.  There are still wing ribs stuffed away in our closets!

One last thing - If you are building a plane, do not let the idiots of the world rag on you and spoil your dream.  Every step of the way, people ran this project down, telling me how "dangerous" it was.  It was only years later when I had more experience with many different airplanes that I realized how stupid those idiots were.  By then, they had done their damage.  - Glen Ward April 2009

The plane had a Kawasaki 440, a 2.8:1 belt drive, and a 72x28 wooden prop.

The instrument panel was once complete, but all but the hour meter were removed to raise funds for other projects.

A wing with covering hangs from the ceiling.

I really liked the design of the control column.  It rode on phenolic bearings and worked quite well, though it was pretty hard to fabricate!

Now, the little purple plane sits on crates, with its landing gear piled on top.

The wire wheels were bought from a catalog place.

The wing ribs are old-school! The spars are built up and the leading edge rap is 1/16" plywood, and structurally functional.
